That was Custom Products that did a run of TechPB barrels.

Ayyyeee I knew you'd correct me on that one.

Well I checked out the chat that's already in place. I have a very limited view (not a lot of experience with chat programs in general, no idea what the "old chat" was like, and I obviously had no access to the available moderator functions) but i don't see any problems with it. Well upon reflection it obviously isn't integrated into the forums, and there doesn't appear to be a way to get to the chat without creating a new room. It works though.

The link in my post (the thing I dug up) doesn't even lead to chat so i'm not sure how the topic was changed immediately. (It actually goes to TechPB radio/TechPB paintball show. Which I still want to know about.

TechPB barrel?! Anyone got a link where I can read about that?

The previous chat was to the right of the TechPB radio. And basically the radio was a massive buzz of new players and spam in the chat while people called in to Willie or Mike. If my memory serves me right I think Willie mostly hosted the show. They had a hotline to call in, and a players club hotline so the players club got preference. People called in asking about recent buzz in the Paintball world, and they usually had a giveaway. I remember somebody capturing most of the radio shows and uploading them to Youtube, so if you want I might be able to find a video of one. I called in once after Living Legends to shout out to Willie. Way back in the day I was a moderator on the chat, and anytime they did a radio show the chat was a real mess of spamming and kicking.

EDIT: Here's a video of the radio show back in the day:

I don't remember which company. It could've been ANSgear but Mike got TechPB put on a bunch of various colors of AC threaded barrels. The colors that people didn't want as much lasted a decent amount of time. I think they were around $30

Here's a video of an unboxing for the red one:

I think it's definitely a help. With a viable chatroom, it causes people to be on TechPB even if they're just there for chat. It's more likely they'll contribute to the forums if they're already on TechPB, and a presence in chat means randos can come in and ask questions, and are more likely to lurk the forums as well.

As for the chat software I'm assuming that it's difficult to ask an administrator to embed the current chat into the top of the forums? The coding wouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

The chat after IRC was integrated into our page, but was still a third party addon. You could still access the chat even if you had been banned or suspended from the forums. IMO it was the best chat just for ease of use, and the moderating tools it had. Much more powerful and useful than the chat we have now, but was more expensive. I'm not gonna get into it here, but I've definitely been looking for ways to go back to that chat software.

It definitely seemed more together than the IRC days when we had to comply with various IRC rules. I remember when we had a Ventrilo server as well. I'm guessing most of that died off with the TechPB forums as well.

Do you think that implementing the original integrated chat would bring back the forums in any way? Or do you think that there are other things that would be better to revive them?

I'd love to have the old chat back, if only the chat coordinator could do coordinate that.

If we had the old chat software back activity would go up again.

What is this "old chat"? How is it better?

The original chat was an IRC chat room, which I don't think would help TechPB at this point as it was hosted off site.

The chat they had after that was embedded at the top of the home page of the forums. So anybody on the forums could easily start chatting away. Which would help the forums survive a little bit.

It's probably safe the assume that having the chat at the top of the page didn't work as it wasn't "mobile friendly". Your forum account was attached to your chatroom account, so a ban would've applied to both.

Look at what I dug up! Can any of the older users tell me what this used to be like? http://www.techpb.com/forum/index.php?app=uportal

The chat used to be where I lived on this website. Actually, it used to be an IRC chat back in the day. I left before they had embedded it into the forums.

I'm surprised that the forums are this quiet. Way back when it used to be buzzing with new posts all day every day and it seemed as though PBN was going into the gutter.

I still have a TechPB barrel :D
