Dumb things that should never work, but totally do

06 August 2012 - 09:09 PM

While I was killing time before work this morning, I was watching some of Tyger's old videos, specifically his video on improvisation. During this video, he mentions that sometimes a dumb idea is the perfect way to win a game. His example was a run-through on the snake side, but I want to know what everybody's favorite emergency bad idea is.

I feel dirty....

There's a trend on these forums form people to emphasize function over form, and thus to frown upon milsim markers.

I tend to agree with this trend. There is too much emphasis in milsim paintball on markers that look awesome rather than markers that perform awesome. Sure, you can make a case that red dots and stocks can help you get comfortable with your marker and thus help you shoot better, but even then it's really not a huge help to most people.

But this phenom build did make me pop one.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go somewhere and have a minor existential crisis. :P

The holistic approach to paintball

04 May 2011 - 02:36 PM

I was having a conversation with Tyger recently about some of the hubbub that's coming from his sudden inclusion of the Tactical Lazer Tag stuff. One thing that we were both somewhat baffled on was this belief that the skills one gets from one sport or hobby can't be applied to another one. This got me thinking, which of your other sports or hobbies would you guys say helps you out in paintball?

This might be really cool. If it works.

Punkworks compiled data sticky of science™?

22 March 2011 - 05:24 PM

Over the past few months I've had a thought percolating in my brain. Punkworks has a ton of good information that dispels a ton of paintball related myths. The one problem is that it's scattered across several hundred threads, some of which aren't available anymore. The simple solution to this would be to make a Punkworks Compiled Data Sticky of SCIENCE™

The immediate benefit of having a place for PW to put all of it's findings is obvious. It would give people a single, comprehensive thread to give out to answer all of the "what barrel is most accurate/does underboring break more paint/do FSRs kill puppies" threads. It certainly wont eliminate these problems, but it will certainly make them easier to solve.

There are a few requirements that need to be addressed first:

1. The thread needs to be easily understood by people who aren't the most mathematically/scientifically inclined.

2. Obviously, all of ByceLarson's and CockerPunk's data on underboring, accuracy, rifling tests, and the like needs to be there.

3. Additional tests/data that aren't from Bryce and CP should also be there, things like LordOdin's FSR degradation and safety tests, rntlee's sabot tests, UVHalo's Paintball ballistics chart (if he would be nice enough to recreate it :))

4. Also obviously, it needs to be well written and ideally entertaining.

Any thoughts?
