Paintball Gun Cams... Contour Roam vs Shot Trak vs ZoomCam at 50 feet

24 April 2015 - 07:38 AM

So, ATN introduced the Shot Trak at the end of the year last year. I've been eyeing them, and they finally hit my magic price point of $99 on ebay so I got one.

For a gun cam, you want the narrow field of view, and the highest resolution possible so you can zoom in more digitally in post production. This is at 50 feet away, and I compared the Contour Roam (very similar to all the other action cams out there, go pro's (not the 4k version) and replay, and drift will all give you a similar shot, as non of them have zoom...

The shot trak has 5x OPTICAL zoom, some action cams brag they have zoom, but they are using DIGITAL zoom which is just compressing your original signal and looks bad the closer you go as the resolution is dropping.

I have a degree in TV and film production and used to sell high video gear, so I understand the best ways to film this sport, and optical zoom is something I have been using since 2010.

I also show my current ZoomCam so you can see what I've developed and how it compares with this new offering in the action cam market. I plan on building a dampening system for my shot trak to eliminate the vibration when firing... I think I can do it!

Ever played paintball in complete darkness?... Marauders of the Lost Mines game!

02 March 2015 - 02:04 PM

So Saturday I played my first scenario inside an abandoned mine... Holy Cow.. It was so crazy, they turned out ALL the lights, and each player had a glow in the dark band on them signifying their team color (red or blue). I was on the red team, and our team worked together to rack up some amazing points in the first half, while keeping the blue team pinned down so they couldn't move freely around the mine.

Here is some footage, where Shawn and I (Trails of Doom guys) were really close to the blue teams spawn, and after moving into this position we quickly realized we had put ourselves in a BAD spot, as there was no way out unless we went THROUGH the blue players...

Check it out!
