Painted Vforce Grill

23 April 2012 - 11:43 PM

I spent the past working on this project, it was my second time ever painting anything so its not perfect but overall I think it came out looking decent.

I first cleaned the mask (after removing everything besides the frame) by first soap and water, then some mineral spirits, afterwards I guess boiled them, I dunked them in boiling water for a few minutes holding them above the bottom of the pot.

The masking was extremely difficult, I spent two hours alone just taping using scotch blue, and gorilla tape. It was near impossible for me to get the top part of the rubber covered perfectly with the exacto knife and the blue was also very tough to stick to the rubber.

I used Krylon fusion as well as adheason promoter I got from a napa auto store.

I wanted to do a cool looking gradient pattern from top to bottom with this bronze and silver but my walmart didn't have any of the hammered colors there so I went with red and blue also picking up a can of clear coat.

The mast was originally an olive color (gross) so I first hit it with three coats of white (after the adheason promoter) Then I did three coats of red across all the plastic. For the blue I waited 15 minutes for the red to dry then held a magazine up to the middle of the mask to prevent blue from getting on the right side, I did two coats like this. Finally I did one more coat of blue but this time I removed the magazine and just lightly misted over the middle of the mask also with the blue to give it that fade look. I also did three clear coats to ensure my paint wont chip.

I let it dry for 6 hours then removed the tape and saw around the jawline that the tape had been coming loose and there was over spray on the rubber. HERE IS WHERE I MADE MY BIGGEST MISTAKE. I didn't have the mineral spirits anymore so I went into the Garage and all I could find was paint stripper, DON'T USE PAINT STRIPPER. I had a near perfect paint job untill I began applying the paint stripper with a brush, some of it smeared and just tore over 7-8 layers of paint down to the olive in literally 3 seconds.

If you ever try removing paint in a detailed manner use mineral spirits or sometimes paint thinner. Paint stripper ruined my entire project (in my mind) it is not noticeable to anyone unless they get close but I can be a perfectionist sometimes with these kinds of things.

If anyone wants to know anything about drying times with Krylon just let me know and I will help you out.

This was written real late at night because I felt like it so my grammar is probably way off but anyways thanks for reading and tell me what you think.

Gun under 350?

07 December 2011 - 07:00 PM

I know the question has been asked but I just really want to be sure I buy the best one as I will be keeping it for a while.

I can NOT but anything used at the moment although I would like to.

I have been researching the guns around this range for a while like the mini, G4, Rail, eXTCy, and the Aura.

I know pretty much all about their main features like the boards, feednecks, and asa's. I am looking for more of an specific opinion not just "G4 hands down"... who does that help?Posted Image

ALSO, please don't talk about price just pretend that all the guns I listed cost 300. I know I'm asking for a lot of info, I don't expect essays I'm just looking for help please

Feel free to suggest any other markers under 350 also please (new not used)

Thanks, Zack

DP G4 vs GoG eXTCy

06 December 2011 - 08:02 PM

300 is roughly my price range, I am stuck on buying new, don't suggest new guns please besides the envy I don't want a mini or a rail. I am leaning towards a G4 because I think the eXTCy is ugly and I have not heard great things about the ion. I am looking for opinions on how well the guns shoot/reliability also I am not worried about the G4's bolt stick as I will have time to break it in over the winter.
