I'd say even cheaper if you do some good lookin around. I made the mistake through my earlier years of getting a gun with almost ALL of my money, then not playing but once every month or so. From experience, if there is the ability to buy the more expensive gun AND play, then go ahead. If money is an issue? Go for cheaper and play!

Victory or GSR.
Heck, if you want more cash in your pocket, Vice.
After having owned an Ego 08, shooting Ego9s and SL8Rs, Owning Many a DM (Dm6, Dm7, Pm8, even Mikko Huttunen's Pm8 all tricked out, PMR, etc.), and then a Bob Long Protege and Marq 7, Bob Long puts out my favorite markers on the market.

It depends still if you like Spool Valves or if you Like Poppets. A finely tuned Victory will shoot very similar to a spool valve gun without the finicky-ness in the cold.
After I tuned the pressures on my Marq 7, I will not willingly buy another Spool Valve gun, and that's that. It shot smoother than my buddy's Dm6, with MUCH MUCH better efficiency.
The Poppet side of guns, the Vice may not look just like an Ego, but that's the point, it is smoother than any Ego out there, it is light as can be, and the size of the gun is incredible. I believe the G6R is the absolute best poppet on the market right now, and Bob's heart and Soul is in that gun. In the hands, it feels amazing, the ergonomics, size, weight, and feel of it is beautiful.

I'm no hater, DMs and Egos have their place, obviously. But I would say you should give Bob's guns a try and decide for yourself.

Playing all over the field, I find the 14" to be the most versatile and best for most situations. I don't like the shorter 12" or 11", although I do prefer the 16" on a Checkit sniper or any other Cocker.

Then again, it depends a lot on the gun as well. I had a 18" inch on a 98 custom, and it was hilariously inaccurate, as well as just clownish, and it added nothing at all. At the same time, an 18" on the Sanchez Sm-1 would be a great addition.
