im not usually one to rant or argue on the internet, since in all reality, it almost always accomplishes nothing, however there are times when we all need to just be pissed and make sure everyone knows we are pissed.
i have noticed recently in both the forums here and really in society as a whole that the use of the word "retard" and other words that stem from it like "retarded," "retards," etc. has become increasingly popular to the point where the words have become a synonym to "stupid" and most give it no second thought. do any of you realize what you are posting or do any of the people who vocally spout about how "that is so fucking retarded" understand the words coming out of their mouths?? i dont want any of you to misconstrue this post as me attacking anyone in particular or looking to pick a fight, i am most certianly not, but i am somewhat upset that this term has become so commonplace in society that what it references is lost on most people.
to give you some background, i am 20 and i have a brother who is 17. we have no other siblings, its just us two. my brother was born with a chromosomal abnormality, essentially the structure of his DNA was altered when he was developing after the egg was fertilized. it is a genetic mutation and not something that happened as the result of an accident or poor parenting or anything else. it is a part of him as much as me having brown hair or how tall i am. the interesting part is that his specific condition has never, and i do mean NEVER, been observer or recorded in any medical records anywhere EVER. this doesn't make him some hideous monster or give him rainman-like abilities but spend more than 2 minutes in close contact with him and you will be easily able to tell he is what most would call "special" or different. medically his situation is fascinating but really for all practical purposes my brother is classified within the autism spectrum as well as being diagnosed with forms of other disorders like a certain level of OCD and ADHD and plenty of other things that are just more labels but the historical (and somewhat derogatory) term for people like this is "RETARDED". this little boy, and i say little boy because he has always been and probably always be a little kid inside, is the single most important person in my entire life. i have a certain bond with him that i doubt any one else could ever understand even if i tried to explain it.
this is why it is upsetting to me to see this word thrown around so nonchalantly and with such negative and derogatory implications. i would give up my life to protect my little brother in a heart beat with absolutely NO second fucking thought and i believe a large part of the bond we have is BECAUSE he is different. he is easy to single out and i was always the one there to take care of him and protect him from the idiots who didn't understand, come whatever may. this is why when i hear people talk about "_____ is so retarded" and every one else thinks "yea that is stupid" or "no, i like _____" my first thought is "what in the FUCK do you mean by retarded?"
i realize im probably guilty of using it once or twice, the same as im sure many people use racial slurs or derogatory terms referring to a persons sexuality now and then as a slip and i realize we all make mistakes, but i guess im just asking that people think about the words they use. you never really know who you are talking to.
